Follicular Unit Extraction Procedure (FUE) is also known as Follicular Transfer (FT). The FUE Hair Transplant Procedure was described for the first time by Masumi Inaba In japan in 1988. William R. Rassman and Robert M. Bernstein for the first time described this procedure in the medical literature n their publication. This is a surgery which is minimally invasive for hair transplantation. During the meeting of the International Society of HAIR Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) in 2007, robotic FUE devices were discussed.
Among two methods of obtaining Follicular Units, this is the one. Strip Harvesting is the other method of obtaining Follicular Units. In the FUE Procedure, the experts use a round punch which is taken from the patient’s bald resistant area one to one basis. The bald resistant areas f the patients are called donor areas. Then these groupings of hair known as follicular unit grafts are transplanted into the balding areas. In Strip Harvesting Procedure, a strip of skin is removed and dissected into many follicular units. These individual follicular units are the basic building blocks of Follicular Unit Transplantation. The follicular units are then transplanted to the thinning area which is called recipient area. Follicular Unit Extraction Transplant technology has grown into Advanced FUE. In Advanced FUE, larger donor pools are created and follicles are harvested from even either than head areas, like back, abdomen, beard, face, chest, legs and arms. With Advance FUE, the fact is revealed that hair grows in curved trajectories and standard FUE surgical helps in assuming that the growth of the hair occurs in straight line.
The FUE Procedure depends on a principle that the area where arrector muscles are attached to the follicular unit is the tightest area. When this zone is made loose and it is separated from the dermis, the inferior segment can be easily extracted. Micropunches have to be used of sizes 0.6-0.8 mm as the follicular unit is narrowest at the surface. Hence, the scars formed can’t be recognised easily as they are too small. FUE procedure gives permanent results and natural-looking hairs.
This procedure gives fast recovery as the patient can start working the next day. This is a minimally invasive procedure and by each passing day experts are inventing more precise tools. FUE Procedure is in high demand now days. With the betterment of the tools the Follicular Unit Extraction Procedure has a bright future.
